Month-By-Month Gardening in Florida

If I moved to Florida tomorrow (wouldn't that be nice!), I'd want a copy of this book as a house warming gift, because I'm no green thumb and I can use all the help I could get. And something tells me this book is all I'd need! An easily-read, well-informed reference for anyone who wants to improve their landscaping (or just get the weeds out of their lawn), this book is a wonderful addition to any home in Florida. Whether you live in North, Central, or South Florida, the author has the information you need to create beautiful gardens and greenspace around your home.

This ready reference is broken down in a few ways. First, it is divided into plant types such as annuals, citrus, lawns, trees & palms, shrubs, etc. Within each plant type section, there is an introduction to the type of plant in the section, subdivided by North, Central or South Florida. We are also given tips on planning, planting, care, watering, fertilizing, and pest control. Next in each section is a chart with selected plants and the areas where they grow best, plus notes about each one including size. From there we begin the monthly breakdown.

Basically, after reviewing the material at the beginning of the section (say, Citrus), we move quickly to the month we are currently in, and follow the step-by-step directions for caring for our selection foliage. For example, within the Citrus section, September's instructions include how to plant, care for the trees, how much water is typically needed this month, and how often to water, which fertilizer to use and when to apply it, and what to make of those blemishes on your citrus fruit now that it is late in the season. In fact, we get a little forewarning that mites can become a problem as drier weather approaches.

I'm delighted by this book, and think you will be, too. With so much information delivered in an uncomplicated way, there's really no reason not to pick one up for yourself or your favorite gardener. Even if you just plan to one day enhance your yard, this book will help you select the types of plants you will want to have, and those that will do best in your area of Florida. A beautiful book blooming with color and wisdom.

Those of you in Florida who have listened to the "Better Lawns and Gardens" radio program will already be familiar with this author. He's one and the same, Tom MacCubbin. Tom is also the author of an Orlando Sentinel gardening column. His website (http://betterlawns.com) details his current job title as "an Extension Agent Emeritus with a full professor equivalent at U of F. His primary assignment has been to assist Florida homeowners in the development and maintenance of home gardens, landscapes, turf and ornamentals which he continues through his many media programs."

Jill does laundry for a 7 year old who thinks he's too old for toys, a 5 year old gymnast, a 5 year old niece who has joined the family, and a 3 year old computer whiz. She also occasionally irons her husband's suits. In between loads, Jill loves to read.
