The Englewood Amateur Radio Club (EARS) recently took part in a nationwide communications exercise called “The Winter Field Day.” There were three stations in operation, using single sideband, Morse code, and various digital communications modes, and they also experimented tracking amateur radio communications satellites as they passed overhead. They even had a kite supporting an antenna, getting it up higher to support various “line-of-sight” communications modes. Although the Winter Field Day is not intended to be a competition, the clubs are ranked and in the off-the-grid winter environment, the club contacted 182 other ham stations on three continents. There were 4,996 Winter Field Day reports and EARS score was 223rd on that list.
