Almost 25 years ago, an Englewood lady noticed a couple of abandoned rowing shells left on the shore, and being an adventuresome and curious person, she set out to teach herself how to row. To operate the rowing shell, you needed more than one person and others were enticed to join her, leading to the formation of the Lemon Bay Crew Club. Over the years, as the club was like the tide, rising with the flow and then ebbing some, but always continuing thanks to its number one cheerleader. On February14th, the club recognized and honored its founding member, Carolyn Pope, by naming a new sweep shell after her. Carolyn said she was shocked and felt humbled by this honor, but club members know no one deserves it more than Carolyn. Her positive and infectious enthusiasm draws and retains her rowing partners.
The Lemon Bay Crew Club gathers every morning at dawn to row on Lemon Bay. They launch at Indian Mound Park to practice their skills and build their speed for competitive racing meets. Classes are available for anyone who expresses an interest in learning the technique and it’s great exercise. The club has both four and eight person sweep shells and a single racing shell.
