The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse & Museum, a cherished local landmark and the oldest structure on Gasparilla Island, is thrilled to announce its reopening to the public on Monday, February 5th. The museum has been closed since September 2022 due to Hurricane Ian. Perched majestically atop iron pilings at the extreme southern end of Gasparilla Island, the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse has served as a guiding light to mariners since its establishment in 1890. The house-dwelling style lighthouse also houses a comprehensive museum dedicated to preserving Boca Grande’s and Charlotte Harbor’s rich history. Starting Monday, February 5, the museum will be open 11am to 4pm, Wednesday through Monday (closed on Tuesdays). On opening day, patrons will receive a 25% discount on all items in the gift shop, complimentary snacks, and a unique opportunity to climb the Boca Grande Lighthouse. Brace yourself for an unforgettable experience as the Barrier Islands Park Society (BIPS) invites you to join a Gasparilla Island Lighthouse History Tour Climb. These tours are offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 1:45pm. Set against the stunning backdrop of Gasparilla Island and the Gulf of Mexico, this historical adventure promises breathtaking views and immersive insights into the region’s rich maritime past. Participants will have the chance to ascend the lighthouse’s 134 steps to the top, where the lantern room awaits, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding beauty. The climb is priced at $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12 years (participants must be at least 48” tall). Due to high demand, climbs can sell out quickly, so early check-in at the lighthouse on the day of the climb is recommended. Climbs are held every 20 minutes.
