Why Are You Hooked On Englewood?
Elizabeth Spicer
Contributing Writer

I recently sold my spacious home off of Placida Road. I wanted to downsize and could have chosen to move anywhere in the world. I ended up in a mid-century modern cottage closer to downtown and the beach. Why? For me, it is the happy and giving folks that make up our community. I also thrill at the sight of a large grey heron, a manatee under a dock, or a dolphin cavorting in the waves with her calf. Englewood is a quiet, sleepy little place but it is so good to come home to after travels. The people here watch out for one another and you can grab a great conversation at local coffee houses any day of the week.

I wanted to know why other people chose Englewood for their home. I made some phone calls. I stopped by a few places. Here is a brief survey of what I found:

John and Karen Mauer, Retired couple and first class sailing team- “We like the cozy homes and lush landscapes.”

Col. Gary Bowman, Vice President, Big Time Auctions - “I love the local people. They create an easy-going atmosphere. There is always someone to talk to up and down Dearborn Street. There is a genuine interest in keeping business local. You just can’t beat it.”

Brad Pike, Co-owner, Funky Thrifty- “I was born here. It has a small, hometown feel. It hasn’t become commercialized like larger cities. There is little traffic. I am loving the new Zeke’s Restaurant on Dearborn.”

Kim Palma, New Resident - “I have only lived here a year and a half, but I chose Englewood over Venice and Sarasota because it is quiet. People lead a slower lifestyle. The beach is pretty and so close.”

Sarah Henry, Massage Therapist, Magic Nails - “I have great neighbors. I can swim in my pool most anytime. I am close to where I work and my colleagues are so nice. Everything is within easy reach traffic wise.”

Alina Reitz, Marketing Specialist - “I just moved here from Sarasota and the beaches are so private. I am with the Englewood Events Center, so I get to see the many shows the company brings in for free. I am very happy here.”

Lynn Means, Retired teacher - “Living here is like every day is Saturday and you are in paradise. I love being outdoors. I grow avocado, bananas, lichee nuts and grapes in my backyard. It is easy and amazing. I love the local YMCA. I play pickle ball and handball at the community center. It’s wonderful!”

KC Bitterman, Executive Director - “I am hooked on Englewood because the friendly people, laid-back atmosphere and arts community make it a pleasure to work at Ringling’s Englewood Art Center.”

Darlyn Hill, Sales Associate,
Nearly New -
“I am a resident of South Gulf Cove. My home is right on a canal. I see all kinds of wildlife from armadillos to bob cats. I like being close to the beach and the small town feel of living here.”

Eric Wickson, Bar Manager,
Lock’n Key Restaurant -
I love the weather and the people. The golfing around here is fantastic and I can choose from many courses.

Lou Gemma, President,
Gem Statewide Plumbing -
“It is a close knit community. I know just about everybody in town. Everyone tries to help neighbors. For example, if my dog gets out of my yard, a neighbor will bring him back. People look out for each other here.”
